Two food recalls were issued that I thought were worth a mid-week note.
Boar’s Head deli meat: The deli meat recall that was included in this week’s Outbreak Outlook has expanded considerably to include various kinds of ham, bologna, sausage, bacon, and more. The full list is available here.
These items are being recalled because of concerns of listeria, a bacterial infection that can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to serious complications like meningitis or septicemia, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
The outbreak has resulted in at least 33 hospitalizations and 2 deaths across 13 states.
Ground cinnamon: At least 9 cinnamon brands from various stores are being recalled because of high lead levels. The affected products were sold Save-A-Lot stores, Dollar Tree, Eurogrocery, and a variety of smaller retailers. The full list is available here.
This follows a major incident of contamination in certain food pouches that led to hundreds of cases of lead poisoning in children late last year.
Lead contamination in various spices has been a source of lead exposure for decades. It's about time the powers that be address it.
