I was on call Wednesday night. In a 16 hour shift we intubated 7 people, two with Flu A, one was a 49 yo woman with (likely post-viral) bacterial pneumonia. We (mid-Atlantic) are almost out of vents. My whole call team was reeling at how all of this is happening in silence. I’ll mask at the grocery store or basketball games with my kids and people ask me why. I’ll just say, “I don’t want to get the flu.” I think it had become so politicized that people forget it’s just something they can do for THEMSELVES (and the community).
As I read this, I can't help but think that the timing of this flu surge is frightening for several reasons, not the least of which is the more people infected with human flu strains, the more opportunity H5N1 has to mix and gain mutations that enhance its human infection capabilities. The question is whether we are going to know if or when that is happening. I'm counting on you, Caitlin!
I don't understand why so few people are wearing a mask during these waves. I mean, I do understand: PH failed to normalize masking when sick as well as mask use for prevention.
Our north central NC area is chock full of ILI hospitalizations. My colleague reported an outpatient case of triple positive antigen testing. He continues to provide a repurposing protocol that has been consistently effective and appears to address all 3 virus' indistinguishable symptoms of fever, cough, myalgias. The targets for the protocol are multisystemic neurotransmitter receptors. It's mitigation of the cytokine inflammatory mechanisms based on critical a7nAChRs dysfunctions that is addressed in a consistent and safe manner. Published pre-clinical experiments document the role of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway in these viral-host immune based infections and agonists and immune modulators of the a7Rs can and do rapidly resolve the illnesses in our local experiences; begging for wider confirmations and clarifications.
I’m a 75 year old cancer survivor, fully vaccinated, and got the flu. Just getting over it. Very rough ride. I tend to catch everything that comes down the pike with my compromised immune system. Without the vaccine thinking I may not survived it. Very grateful!
Every year epidemiologist basically make an educated guess on the three most likely flu strands most likely to present themselves in the next year. They actually do this based on science that’s too detailed to get into this but occasionally they get it wrong. There’s been several years in the past where they have. But most of the time they get it right. vaccinations are just a little bit of a bacteria or virus that stimulates your immune system enough to recognize it next time and fight it off. In the olden days, people used to take thistles and rub them against cows, infected with cowpox and then rub them against their arms. An old-fashioned smallpox vaccine, but it worked. They haven’t gotten it wrong. It’s just that it’s not a perfect system. But it’s gonna get a lot less perfect. If I were you, I’d vaccinate for everything. Shingles, RC V, flu, Covid at least the first two until the booster is shown to be worth something. Anything you can vaccinate yourself from will help you. If you have a compromised immune system, you need to check with your medical provider, but if you’re relatively healthy, take them all and just check on the CDC website before it goes down when RFK tanks it and see the age-appropriate vaccinations. Don’t not vaccinate because you think the flu season got you this time and it was wrong. Sometimes it is wrong because scientist aren’t perfect because humans aren’t perfect.
Thank you very much. Flu A hit me two weeks ago after traveling for a college visit. It is now hitting our school. It is no joke! Grateful for vaccines!
Curious about if there's any evidence for a cumulative benefit of 37 years of flu shots. My husband & I have worked in healthcare all our lives, but, it wasn't until around 1988 that flu shots were given to healthcare workers who were under 65 years old. We both had the flu twice pre-1988, & since having annual vaxes we haven't had it. I know the strains always change, & the benefit is around 50%, but, I've always wondered if there's some kind of cumulative benefit. Thanks! I couldn't find any evidence on PubMed.

as alwaYS very appreciative of the information

Thank you, it's important to keep up to date but hardest to uncover the data.
Thank you for updates!
Is this a huge opportunity for the various viruses to combine into the the one that all the scientists have been worried about for several decades?
How should those of us who are actually paying attention prepare for a worst case scenario?
I think it’s pretty clear now that there will be no government information forthcoming- we have seen this show before.
So what can we do to prepare for a flu pandemic with no data available to those of us who are most vulnerable?

We’re on the same page, thank you for the advice!

Thank you!🙏. Your Substack is a healing agent in and of itself.
Are there any stats breaking out severity for the immune compromised?
My son and I just got over flu A. Tamiflu is a gift!

Thank you. We have just started seeing B in NJ… the fun continues. :-(
