Our pediatric nurse said the RSV shot won't be available until November, because that's when the season starts. Is there anything we can do to change that policy? She said we could pay for the shots out of pocket, which is not financially feasible.
Also, I totally agree about sick days. We're on the principal's sh** list for having too many days out sick last year. But it's because my kid was genuinely sick. If they didn't actively encourage parents to send kids to school sick -- to the point of sounding threatening about absenteeism -- we wouldn't have gotten sick so much and missed time. Trust me, as a working mom and a lifelong learner, I want my kid in school as much as possible!!
That may be a rule specific to the clinic. The formal recommendation is October to end of March, but flexible based on RSV activity. See the timing section: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/72/wr/mm7234a4.htm
You understandably focus the outbreak review on respiratory illness and US outbreaks, but it is worth reporting on a massive outbreak of STEC infections in day care centers in Calgary AB. It's a great chance to remind your readers about this potentially lethal food bornedisease. The source appears to be a caterer who serves multiple centers, and all of the case-children were present when meatloaf was served. The confirmed case count is up to 348; more than 20 children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). As we would expect with such a large outbreak of this bug that is usually foodborne but can also be transmitted via the fecal oral route, secondary cases are rising. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/secondary-spread-e-coli-calgary-1.6970522
Wow, I hadn’t heard of this. I’m a public health nurse in the US and have been working up a few STEC cases, but nothing crazy. Foodborne in general seems to be up though. Thanks for sharing this info.
It has been hot in the Midwest too. Covid is definitely up all over. I seriously don’t know when to send my kiddo to school. He has a URI, tested negative for Covid. He always masks at school, so I just keep sending him. If I don’t he gets behind and I am having to be his teacher, which was bad during the pandemic and worse now that the teachers don’t post everything online. I just wish there was a plan so we don’t have to send our kids to school sick and so that it would be easier to catch them up if they are out. I work from home and have a high schooler, so I worry less about my own sick days, but most weeks one person on my team is out for sick kids and when it is Covid they are out for a while because the kiddos can’t go back to daycare for a long time.
Congratulations on the funding! It’s great news for everyone, especially for those of us wanting to make informed decisions based on current information. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I'm on board if parents want to use today's comment thread to vent about sick days 🥲

Thank you! I will take this in for the next visit!

>>it is interesting to me that the summer Covid-19 wave, early RSV activity, and now ILI are all beginning in the South<<
I bet this is due to the extreme hot weather we have had which has forced people in the south to remain indoors in the air conditioning.
You sure are not kidding, MCPS is going crazy with this attendance crackdown!
